Yatsugatake and Shinshu region spreading across the foothills attract countless visitors for climbing, hiking and so on. There are several aggressive climbing points that any experienced climber might challenge, yet it is on the whole easy to climb Yatsugatake and, in addition, there is convenient facilities and local bus service that leads you to the halfway of the mountains.
Once you go down a hill, local Onsen (hot spring) and Kousen (mineral spring) are ready to offer you a comfort and healing atmosphere.

Yatsugatake
Yatsugatake refers to eight mountains, Tengudake, Gongendake, Yokodake, Ioudake, Amidadake, Amikasayama, Nishiyama and Akadake.
The name of Akadake is derived from its reddish rocky surface, and it has been said that all the other mountains are named according to their shapes and physical characteristics.
Yatsugatake is divided into Minami-Yatsugatake and Kita-Yatsugatake, and Tateshina-yama is situated in the latter. Tateshina-yama is selected to be among the hundred best mountains in Japan.

High Lakes

There are several lakes around Yatsugatake. For example, Shirakoma-ike is the largest high lake in Japan.
Suribachi-ike found near Tengu-dake is said to be mysterious as the water disappears in summer time.

Low zone (under 1,500m altitude) \ Akamatsu, Karamatsu, Shirakaba, Kikyou, Genno-Shouko, Ominaeshi
Middle zone (between 1,500m and 2,500m) \ Shirabiso, Kogane, Dakekanba, Kokemomo, Gozen-Tachibana, Iwakagami
High zone (over 2,500m) \ Komakusa, Yatsugatake-Kinpoge, Kuroyuri, Hinarindo

Wild Animals

You will find various types of animals in Yatsugatake. Some are about to extinct and protected such as Nihon-Kamoshika and Yamaneko. You may come across Okojo, Yamane, and hare or even Ten.
